Click here to read this on the web Hello, beautiful people! On May 16, 2007, after an X-ray, a CT, and a lot of down time in the ER, I was told that the cause of my breathing trouble appeared to be non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and they were going to move me upstairs. It turned out to be Hodgkin’s, but still. Cancer doesn’t make anyone’s day better. Fast forward 15.5 years, and I stopped emailing you weekly to focus on a new project. (Yeah, a few things happened in between, but this is an email, not a memoir!) I’m pleased to announce that the project is ready to come into the world (and that getting back to writing is on my hope-to-do list). On the 17th anniversary of my preliminary diagnosis date, I will be launching a Kickstarter* for my new card deck, “How Not to Say Dumb Sh-t to Someone Dealing with Cancer.” If you’re interested in checking it out, you can use this link to see the Kickstarter preview and sign up with them to get notified when the campaign goes live. If you’d like to stay in the loop on other portions of this project (there’s an app in the works and other decks on deck haha), you can add yourself to this list just by clicking here. (That works from the email, not if you’re reading the email on the web.) It’s been a wild ride putting this thing together. I’m pleased with how it turned out, I’ve gotten very good response from people who have seen it so far, and I’m hoping to make a lot of people’s lives a little bit better. And hopefully I’ll start popping back in here in the fall. That’s the plan. We’ll see... *Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform for creative projects. As the creator, I build out my idea and let people pre-buy it, which gives me the money up front to fund its tangible creation. In other words, I don’t have to guess how many decks to have printed—they’re ordered. It will last three weeks, and you only get charged if enough orders are placed to meet my funding goal. Writer. Photographer. Occasionally hilarious. Always curious.
Inbox Exhibition Welcome to the inaugural season of Inbox Exhibition! It will be running from Sunday, February 15 to Sunday, March 15. This season will focus on desert photography. Will all the days be desert photography? No, but most will be. What to expect: some edited, some as-is, maybe a drawing or painting here or there. This project uses a pay-what-you-want model. I take PayPal or Venmo–let me know which you prefer, and I'll send you the link. (Need a different option? Let's see what we...
Click here to read this on the web Hello, beautiful people! It's the time of year when inboxes are overwhelmed with deals and steals and pleading and all varieties of "give me your money, please!" This email is not one of those. While I appreciate the push behind Giving Tuesday, here's my recommendation. Find one of your people who needs some connection and make a coffee date with them. Or take their kids for two hours so they can have time to themselves. Or think of a friend who is...
Click here to read this on the web Hello, beautiful people! It's been a minute since I've popped into your inbox! I've been working diligently on the cancer project. It's progressing, not as quickly as I'd like, but it's getting there. Also in this time, I've been running. Despite it being 110 (43C) or hotter for July, I ran. For safety in those temperatures, I limited my outings to sunrise or sunset. For a long time, I have been firmly of the opinion that you should exercise regularly, at...
